I want to highlight the biggest “unseen” threat that's preventing you from making any kind of significant and lasting progress with your eating.
The truth is, a lot of people I speak with who struggle with binge and emotional eating, unknowingly sabotage their chances of changing their relationship with food.
This is something I see happening ALL THE TIME… and yet, nobody really talks about it.
Why?
Because nobody realises when it’s happening to them.
So what's the BIGGEST threat you're facing?
Hint: It's got NOTHING to do with the food.
Your biggest obstacle is...
Bringing your stories about the PAST into the PRESENT
So what do I mean by “stories”?
Well, can you picture the last time you "fell off the wagon" with your eating?
Now, all experiences have 2 parts...
1 - The TRUTH of what happened (the FACTS)
2 - All the extra stuff (the STORIES) we tell ourselves about what happened.
Here's the thing.
Your brain is a meaning-making machine.
Anytime something happens, your brain will go into overdrive trying to attach a meaning to it.
But here’s the challenge with that…
If gone unchecked (if we allow our mind to run amuck), these meanings can quickly snowball into full-blown “stories” like...
There must be something wrong with me.
I must be broken.
I'll never work this out..
I'm addicted to food.
I'm a chocoholic.
I have no willpower.
I must really hate myself to keep doing this.
I have no self-control around food.
I'm an emotional mess.
I can't cope without the food.
I always gain the weight back.
I can never stay consistent.
Problem is, when you bring these stories into the PRESENT moment you effectively talk yourself into the very behaviours you're desperately trying to get rid of.
That's how the stories you keep telling yourself (about your past) actually predict AND become your future.
And it's a vicious cycle that'll keep repeating UNTIL you learn how to change your relationship to your stories.
I mean, think about it this way...
If you go through your day listening to a soundtrack of unhelpful and disempowering stories, will you create more success or less?
Obviously LESS, right?
And that's why...
BEFORE YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD, YOU MUST FIRST CHANGE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR STORIES.
And that's also why you can't just force yourself into some new healthier habits with your eating.
It doesn't matter how good the meal plan is or even how committed you are, if deep down you're still telling yourself you're broken, you lack self control, and you're a food-addict or sugar-junkie, guess what?
You will keep failing.
These stories are providing all the excuses, doubts, and limitations you need to explain why you can't and won't succeed.
NOT because the stories are true, but because you BELIEVE they are true.
Your STORIES will create your REALITY. Every. Single. Time.
And when you listen to these crappy stories, when you focus on these crappy stories, and when you believe these crappy stories, you're really just rehearsing and practicing the very patterns and behaviours they're describing.
So every time you tell yourself you're a stress eater, well the next time you get stressed, that story simply gives you the permission you need to repeat that same pattern.
Every time you tell yourself you're a chocoholic, what's going to happen the next time you see a block of chocolate?
The story will instruct your brain to eat it.
And the instruction will get delivered as an urge or a craving or some kind of food compulsion.
If you always tell yourself you can be great with your eating all week, but then you always blow it on Friday's; again your belief in this story will mean that next Friday, you will once again find yourself elbow deep in a bag of crisps.
Your reality with food is a reflection of your stories.
And your brain will always get you to choose and behave in accordance with these stories.
It's just how the brain works.
Your brain. My brain. All our brains.
Your stories will talk you into or out of every choice you make.
Over time, these choices become your habits.
Your habits create your results and life experiences.
And your results and experiences generate more of the same stories that justify the same choices and habits, produce the same results... and the entire cycle just keeps getting repeated and reinforced.
And when you're stuck in a cycle like this, you will never exceed your own expectations.
If you expect to binge eat, you will.
If you expect to fail, you will.
If you expect the wheels to fall off every night after work, they will.
And we expect these things will happen, not because that's the way thing are, but because we're listening to a bunch of stories that are telling us that's the way things are.
So the absolute FIRST thing you MUST do to create a new reality with food, is to learn how to let go of your stories.
Problem is, most of us are very attached to our stories, right?
Because it's through our stories that we make sense of our life.
And so we don't like it when our stories get challenged.
Because if our stories aren't true, that means we aren't who we think we are.
And if we aren't who we think we are, then who the heck are we?
But unless you challenge and let go of your crappy stories, you'll just remain the same.
Your past patterns and habits around food, they'll continue to be the exact same patterns that show up toady... and again tomorrow, and the day after that.
And that's the #1 reason why most people struggle with changing their eating habits.
It's got nothing to do with willpower or intelligence or having the perfect meal plan.
Freedom with food doesn't begin in the kitchen.
It begins in your brain.
But here's the good news.
The way you think and the stories you keep telling yourself can all be changed.
You weren't born with any of these stories.
They were wired in.
And now it's like these stories are part of a soundtrack that's stuck on auto repeat.
Think of it like this.
Imagine you're driving along a dirt road, that's a bit rough because it's not used by many vehicles.
But now you begin driving along it every day.
Over time your tires will create grooves or ruts in the surface, right?
And the more often you drive along the road, the deeper these grooves get etched.
And now the tires on your car naturally just follow these well worn grooves.
In fact, it's almost impossible to drive along the road without falling into these ruts.
Well, this is exactly what happens with your stories.
The longer you listen to them, the deeper those grooves gets etched.
And before long, they've created well-worn pathways in your brain that all your habits around food travel along.
And your choices and behaviours naturally now just align themselves with these pathways.
And the more you listen to and believe the stories, the bigger and more prominent your emotional eating or binge eating or overeating pathways become.
So what's the answer?
Well, you have to start driving along a different road.
You have learn how to create a new set of grooves and pathways that give rise to a new set of habits and behaviours instead.
And it's not as hard as you think.
It's a process called neuroplasticity.
Because whether you like it or not, your brain, just like the rest of your body, is changing all the time.
The question is.... are YOU directing those changes?
Are you intentionally and purposefully building the neural pathways that will allow you to show up differently around food?
Because by doing nothing, the stories, grooves and pathways you already have, they'll just keep getting deeper and stronger and more persistent.
In other words, they'll just keep you stuck repeating the same patterns from one day to the next.
So if you want to end binge, stress or emotional eating...
Forget about calories or macros.
Forget about diets and detoxes
Forget about carbs, fats and proteins.
Forget about meal plans and recipes.
Forget about keto and intermittent fasting
Forget about weighing, measuring and tracking.
And start by taking a look at your stories instead.
But don't just look at them.
Learn how to stop listening to them.
Divorce them.
Because that's what's REALLY preventing you from making any progress with your eating.
So if this is something you'd like to know more about...
If you get a sense that you're being weighed down by a bunch of dis-empowering crappy stories and inner-conversations that are draining your energy, zapping your confidence, and keeping you locked up in the same vicious cycles with your eating...
